What is Yoga

Yoga is an ancient Indian system that offers wisdom, techniques and practices to support physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.
Yoga brings the body and mind together and is built on three main elements – Movement, Breathing and Meditation.
Yoga has many physical and mental health benefits including improved posture, flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness.

Essentially, yoga is a process of self-realisation and discovering the true nature of things. While it may appear that yoga is a group activity, the journey itself is an individual one. And as such, everyone will have their own unique level of understanding as they progress along the path of yoga.

“Yoga is controlling the senses – will and mind. The benefit of its study is that we learn to control instead of being controlled.”

Swami Vivekanand

Gungahlin In Person Yoga Program

Within SD Mission, we believe Yoga is vital for everyone to learn and practice.

Yoga and Meditation not only has physical, mental health and spiritual benefits, we believe participation will alleviate isolation for some, thus improving their overall well-being, which is one of the objects of SD Mission.

Learning and practicing Yoga should be affordable by all, if not free.  We are currently running a number of Yoga and Meditation programs on mixed pattern. Some programs are completely free of cost to participants and some are being run on a partial cost recovery basis to sustain the program for long term.

We aim to keep the cost of yoga program to a minimum practical by utilising maximum volunteer resources.  In order to sustain the Yoga Program for long term we ask nominal cost sharing from some participants and the rest of the cost is absorbed by SD Mission.

Basics of your Yoga Journey

Most people take up Yoga for physical fitness. That is why out of eight traditional organs (Ashtang) of Yoga, yogasanas are the most widely practiced. But Yoga is not the practice of yogasanas alone. It is the way of harmonious living. It is also the way of awakening the higher mind and achieving self-realisation.

Yoga is safe for most if practiced with awareness.  Practice yoga with your own safe range of movement with awareness of your body’s capabilities and limitations.

If you have any medical conditions and health challenges, you should consult your Physician before you join and undertake Yoga practice.

The instructions given in a group class are intended as general guidance. Therefore, it is participant’s responsibility to adjust their practice according to their capability and limitations on the day to avoid any injury.  Do not engage in improper practice.

Each individual body and its flexibility is unique on a given day.  So work on your own pace. Yoga practice is not a competition.  It is a unique journey of every person.
